2020 Subaru BRZ vs. 2022 Subaru BRZ

The Subaru BRZ is an exciting sports car that puts the same technology used to power Subaru's off-roading vehicles to work to create racing performance. While the BRZ won't be winning any laps on any actual racetrack, it offers enough speed and agility to make your everyday drive more thrilling.

The first generation of the Subaru BRZ had a long and distinguished run, but it ended with the 2020 model. Subaru took a year off to assess and reconfigure the popular sports car, and now it is back with the exciting 2022 BRZ, kicking off the second generation of what will no doubt continue to be a beloved sports coupe.

Here's a closer look at the new BRZ and how it compares to the outgoing model:

Exterior Styling

The Subaru BRZ had a relatively stable look throughout the first generation. The 2022 model has received major design upgrades that give it a more upscale and exciting look that's fitting for a sports coupe.

Most notably, the front end of the 2022 BRZ has been given more dramatic styling, with blistered fenders that stand apart from the body and redesigned headlights with a larger and sleeker shape. Large air ducts at the side of the grille add style while also helping to reduce drag at faster speeds.

You'll also see more accents along the body of the new BRZ, ending in a wider haunch with aggressively styled tail lights and dual exhaust. The overall effect is a sophisticated car that looks like it's ready for action.

Interior Styling

While the overall aesthetic is much the same inside the new BRZ compared to its outgoing model, the upgrades contribute to a more dynamic and sophisticated design. For example, the previously staid horizontal dash now has active lines, interesting shapes, and chrome accents to bring out the visual appeal. The console has been redesigned, and it now features more controls right at the driver's fingertips.

Comfortable and handsome cloth upholstery comes standard on the 2022 BRZ, just as it did on the 2020 model, but leather upholstery is available if you move up to the next trim level (as are a lot of other interior upgrades). Seating continues to be for five. However, an option is available for quad bucket seats that would reduce seating to four but perhaps provide more comfortable seating.

Powertrain and Performance

Of course, with a sporty coupe, one of the most pressing questions that buyers will have is how well the car performs. The 2022 model gets a bigger and more powerful engine that enhances performance and that many will find makes it more fun to drive.

The 2022 BRZ gets a 2.4-liter H4 engine that puts out 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Compare that to the 2.0-liter engine on the 2020 model that only put out 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque (or less, depending on RPMs). With the new BRZ, you get maximum torque at only 3,700 RPS, compared with 6,400 RPMs on the outgoing model. That means that you'll enjoy a more powerful driving experience even at lower speeds. Both automatic and manual transmissions are available.

The powertrain on the new Subaru BRZ also sits lower in the chassis, giving it a lower center of gravity and increased torsional stiffness. That means that you'll feel more in control of the vehicle even on tight turns and even at fast speeds. The engine is even quieter, giving you a more peaceful ride.

Overall, you'll find the performance and handling on the 2022 BRZ much improved, leading to some exciting new driving experiences.

Technology and Convenience Features

Upgrades are made throughout the 2022 BRZ to make driving more fun and convenient. The infotainment system is upgraded with a larger touchscreen display - 8.0 inches compared to the outgoing model's 7.0 inches, and it maintains Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. HD and satellite radio are still included, as are Bluetooth connectivity and steering wheel-mounted controls.

A 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster with a center-mounted tachometer is added for easy access. Other standard features include two USB ports for charging and streaming devices, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, and push-button start.

Move up to the next trim level on the BRZ and you gain access to features like heated seats, auto-off headlights, intermittent windshield wipers, remote engine start, and more. Only two trim levels are available on the 2022 BRZ - the Limited and the Premium - but you'll find that they are more than enough to offer everything you would want in the vehicle.

Safety Features

Most people drive a sports car for the thrill of the drive. Feeling a little unsafe is part of the allure. However, safety is still important, and the 2022 Subaru BRZ has enough to support you so you can enjoy that thrill ride without having to face any of the potential consequences.

In addition to a full suite of airbags, the 2022 BRZ has some of the most up-to-date safety features available, including daytime running lights, auto-leveling headlights, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, traction and stability control, braking assistance, lane departure warning, lane departure assistance, and blind spot monitoring.

The 2022 model scored "Good" on all tests for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, except for the Front Crash Prevention Results, for which it scored "Superior." The 2020 model scored "Good" on all tests, except the Small Overlap Front: Driver's Side test, for which it scored "Acceptable." Results aren't yet available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but we're confident they will be equally high.

The 2022 BRZ also has a security system and engine immobilizer to protect against threats off the road.
