Subaru WRX Model Research

The Subaru WRX all-wheel-drive sport compact car was originally based on the Impreza and created for the World Rally Championship back in 1992. Subaru tells us that the name WRX stands for "World Rally eXperimental."

Fast forward to 2015, and the WRX lineup was split from the Impreza range along with a different body style to simply be marketed as the stand-alone WRX.

  • The Impreza WRX was first sold in the US in 2002 as a generation 2 model affectionately known as the "bugeye" model by Subaru enthusiasts, referring to its front-end styling.
  • The Subaru WRX followers, with a penchant for unique naming of the WRX, followed on from the "bugeye" model by naming the 2004 facelift as the "blobeye," and two years later, the "hawkeye" refresh was introduced.
  • Based on the fourth generation Impreza for 2015. The WRX was fitted with a higher output engine, firmer sports-orientated suspension, larger brakes, resculpted body panels, lowered ride height and sportier larger intakes.
  • Subaru, in 2015, decided not to produce the WRX in a hatchback as previously offered, which did disappoint enthusiasts as the hatchback had accounted for around 50 percent of US WRX sales.
  • The new WRX model saw a departure from Subarus's iconic EJ 2.5-liter flat 4 Boxer engine, and the new 2.0-liter FA20F engine with direct injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger does duty in the engine bay.
  • The FA engine is rated at 268 horsepower at 5,600 rpm at 2,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft torque at 2,000 for international models.
  • The introduction of WRX Generation 2 in 2021 saw the fitment of a 2.4-liter turbocharged horizontally opposed four-cylinder boxer engine, making 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
  • The WRX has continued to date with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard fitment with an optional Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission with Intelligent, Sport 6-speed paddle shift emulation and "Sport Sharp" 8-speed paddle shift emulation.
  • WRX models are fitted with the Subaru AWD system, referred to as Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. This drive system continually evaluates and redirects power to all four wheels, creating more consistency in power distribution to avoid any loss of traction.
