The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it high marks for its advanced safety features. They include a rearview camera, automatic high beams, adaptive headlights, heads-up display, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking. Plus, there are two full LATCH car-seat connector sets and an upper tether on the SUV's rear middle seat.

 Subaru Intelligent Drive

To enhance the performance of the 2018 Subaru Forester it has Subaru Intelligent Drive or SI-DRIVE. This system gives the Forester three different vehicle performance mode characteristics. It regulates the engine control unit, as well as the transmission control unit by fine-tuning the SUV's electronically controlled throttle. Plus, its fully synchronized 6-speed manual has an incline start assist.

X-Mode Featuring Hill Descent Control

The 2018 Subaru Forester also has X-Mode. This adds to its off-road reputation. By simply pressing a button, drivers can optimize the control of the all-wheel-drive system, throttle, stability, and traction control, as well as Hill Descent Control. This maximizes the Forester's ability to handle steep inclines and slippery surfaces. X-Mode can optimize the output of the engine, as well as the ratio position of the transmission. This increases the engagement of the all-wheel-drive system and optimizes traction when traveling at low speed on surfaces with low friction and enhances control over the VDC system. This also reduces individual wheelspin. The X-Mode system employs Hill Descent Control to help maintain a constant speed when the SUV is traveling downhill to enhance vehicle control.

Vehicle Dynamics Control

Vehicle Dynamics Control is electronic stability control using sensors that constantly monitor steering angle, wheel speed, vehicle yaw rate, brake pressure, and lateral g-forces. Vehicle Dynamics Control detects the difference between the intended path of the driver and the vehicle's actual path and reduces engine torque and applies braking power to help to correct the vehicle path.

Traction Control System

VDC also incorporates a system that provides all-wheel and all-speed traction control. The system senses loss of traction and immediately applies braking force on the wheels that are slipping to maintain proper, safe, stable vehicle motion.

Active Torque Vectoring

This system works with VDC to apply braking power inside the front wheel. This results in higher cornering limits when turning, more neutral steering, better handling, and sharper turn-ins.

The outstanding performance of the 2018 Subaru Forester is what sets it apart from the competition. With its symmetrical all-wheel drive providing good road grip, the Forester can easily handle some light off-roading. When it is driving on the pavement, the compact SUV drives like a much smaller vehicle. It has controlled body motions, a balanced, comfortable ride, and commendable engine power. With a turning radius of only 34.8 feet, the 2018 Subaru Forester can easily navigate tight spaces and deliver a well-rounded performance. Its turbocharged four-cylinder engine gives it a more authoritative acceleration in daily driving. The Forester delivers smooth, even power, and its suspension blends both comfort and control and does not sacrifice either. Its electrically assisted power steering is precise. Plus, it has a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 pounds.
