2019 Subaru Ascent vs. 2022 Subaru Ascent


The Subaru Ascent is a great family-friendly SUV. This vehicle gives you three rows of seating so that you have plenty of space for family and friends. You also get good cargo space with this vehicle, as well as some nice technology and safety features. Also, you know with a Subaru you are going to have reliable performance and features like all-wheel drive add to that capability. This SUV option is a great one, but as you are looking into the Subaru Ascent, you may wonder which model year is the right option for you.

Performance and Engine Options

The Subaru Ascent offers you a capable performance whether you choose the 2019 model or the 2022 model. There is not a huge difference in terms of performance capabilities between these two years. 

  • 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine - Both vehicles are home to a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that gives you 260-horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. 

The Ascent has standard all-wheel drive and the engine is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Both the 2019 and the 2022 Ascent can offer you some off-road capability with 8.7-inches of ground clearance. Both vehicles can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. 

With the 2022 Subaru Ascent, you do add a little bit more capability with the addition of X-mode traction management and hill descent control. The X-mode traction system is like a more advanced all-wheel drive that gives you additional capability in different weather conditions, as well as other off-road abilities. It is a way that the 2022 Ascent steps up the performance. 


The exterior of the Subaru Ascent is rugged and capable. It offers you features like LED lighting, all-wheel drive, good ground clearance, raised roof rails, and more. The exact exterior features you have depend on the specific trim you choose. There are many of the same features from the 2019 to the 2022 Subaru Ascent. However, not every exterior feature is the same. 

One big exterior difference between the 2019 and the 2022 Subaru Ascent comes in the form of the Onyx Edition. This is a new trim level for the 2022 Subaru Ascent, and it adds both interior and exterior features. On the exterior, the Onyx has black exterior trim and 20-inch wheels. It also gives you a hands-free liftgate and reverse automatic braking with an optional panoramic moonroof. The Onyx brings a different look to the Ascent, and it also offers you some extra features, if you like the look of this trim, you will have to choose the 2022 Ascent, as this trim option is not available on the 2019 model year.

Interior and Technology

Both the 2019 and 2022 Subaru Ascent have three rows of seating for seven or eight people depending on the configuration. Depending on the model, you may have a second row bench seat or second row captain's chairs. Both vehicles give you standard cloth upholstery, but have leather upholstery, heated seats, and ventilated front seats as options. 

In terms of cargo space, you get 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row of seating. You get 47.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seating, and you can get up to 86.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded down. 

For technology features, both vehicles offer you standard Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system. You have the option to upgrade to a larger 8-inch touchscreen, a premium audio system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and additional USB ports. 

The main difference between these two vehicles is again the Onyx Edition, which offers you slightly different features. With the Onyx trim, you get Subaru's StarTex water-repellant upholstery, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry, navigation, and push-button start. 


When it comes to safety, there are some changes from the 2019 Subaru Ascent to the 2022 Subaru Ascent. The 2019 Ascent has a lot of great safety features to offer you, but by the 2022 model, you have some additional features and additional standard features. 

For the 2019 Ascent, you do get the EyeSight safety package standard. This safety package includes forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane keep assist. 

By the time you get to the 2022 Ascent, you now have a standard rear-seat reminder, which helps remind you so that you do not forget children or pets in the rear seats. You also add automatic high beams and steering-responsive LED lights, which can help keep you safer by helping you see better at night and allowing other vehicles to see you better as well. You also have an upgraded adaptive cruise control feature that adds lane centering and lane keep assist capabilities; this can help you stay a safe distance from other vehicles, while also keeping you safely in your lane. The added safety technology gives the 2022 Ascent an edge in terms of safety, but there are still a lot of standard safety features in the 2019 model. 

The Subaru Ascent was redesigned for the 2019 model year, so the 2019 Ascent is a very capable vehicle with a lot of great features. The 2022 Subaru Ascent does add some additional safety features and continues to get better for you. You can also find the new Onyx Edition available in the 2022 model, which adds some features. However, both models are great choices. If you are looking for a slightly more affordable option, going with the 2019 Ascent could be the right choice for you.
