2021 Subaru Outback Trims & Packages

For more than two decades, the Subaru Outback has been delivering exceptional performance in a stylish package. The rugged SUV is strong and capable, but it is also attractive and comfortable. It is a crowd-pleasing vehicle, offering features for everyone - from families who want a spacious and comfortable ride to weekend adventurists who want to go off the beaten path to young professionals who want to make an impression when they pull up curbside.

The 2021 Subaru Outback came stocked with plenty of great features. But it also came in seven trim levels to give buyers the flexibility to get the right configuration of features they wanted. Options packages gave them additional flexibility to customize their new Outback.

Here's a closer look at each of the trim levels and packages for the 2021 Subaru Outback:

The base level Subaru Outback doesn't have a special name; it is just the Outback. The base level trim is outfitted with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder Boxer engine that puts out 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission that creates smooth handling. Symmetrical all-wheel drive ensures that power is evenly distributed to all wheels to provide more leverage on tough terrain. An X-mode with hill control also gives drivers more control on steep inclines.

Some exterior features on the base level Outback include 17-inch black aluminum-alloy wheels with a machine finish and LED steering responsive headlights. These headlights were previously only available on upper-level trims, but were made standard on the 2021 model. Standard roof racks provide additional space for storing cargo, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance ensure you can amble over rocky terrain without trouble.

The interior is outfitted with comfortable cloth upholstery, and features include the Subaru Starlink Multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, advanced adaptive cruise control, and EyeSight Driver Assistance Technology, which includes a backup camera, automatic emergency braking, automatic headlights and high beams, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

The next trim level on the Outback hierarchy is the Premium trim. It includes most of the features you'll find on the base level, plus a few extras.

Exterior features added on the Premium trim level include body-color folding side mirrors with integrated turn signals, LED fog lights, and windshield de-icers for the front and rear.

You'll see more changes inside the Outback Premium. The interior gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter handle, heated seats, and a 10-way power driver seat. The infotainment system is bumped to an 11.6-inch touchscreen display, and additional features include wi-fi capability, two extra USB charging ports in the rear, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

One of the great things about the 2021 Subaru Outback is that with each trim level, you see a nice range of features added. With some other vehicles, you might pay a premium for a new trim level, only to get a few new features. That's not the case with the Outback.

With the Outback Limited, you get a lot of additional interior features. The exterior is upgraded with 18-inch black aluminum-alloy wheels with a machine finish, though the rest of the exterior remains the same. Inside, you get leather-trimmed upholstery and heated rear seats to match the front. Both front seats are power adjustable.

Access is made more convenient on the Limited trim.  Keyless access with push button start is also added. There is even PIN code access for an added layer of security. In the rear, you get a hands-free power liftgate.

A Harman Kardon premium audio system rounds up the updates.

Limited XT

The Limited XT has all the features of the Limited trim, but it adds a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that puts out 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. It gives drivers more power to go to more out-of-the-way places. The stronger engine also increases the towing capacity from 2,700 to 3,500 pounds.

Though you may not think there were many more features that the Outback could add,the Touring trim level introduces several great options.

The exterior gets body colored door handles with a sleek chrome insert, as well as power-folding mirrors with integrated turn signals and a satin chrome finish.

Inside, the seats become not only heated, but also ventilated for those warmer months. The steering wheel gets heated also for total comfort in the cooler months. The upholstery gets trimmed with a higher-grade Nappa leather, and navigation is added to the infotainment system. The DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System is added to the suite of safety features.

Finally, a power tilt and sliding moonroof is added.

Touring XT

Just like with the Limited trim, you can upgrade the Touring to the Touring XT, which will come with the more powerful, turbocharged engine.

Onyx Edition XT

The Onyx Edition XT is the highest trim level of the 2021 Subaru Outback, and it includes all the best features that the SUV has to offer.

It comes with the same turbocharged engine available on the higher-level trims, as well as the larger wheels. It also comes with body color door handles and folding side mirrors with integrated turn signals in a Crystal Black Silica finish.

The interior has StarTex water-repellent upholstery. The infotainment system includes the larger touchscreen display, as well as a six-speaker audio system.

Reverse automatic braking is added to the list of safety features.
