2023 Subaru Crosstrek

Looking at the usual design cycle for Subaru, the Crosstrek was due for a whole new design for the 2023 model. The new generation was introduced in 2018, and it received a mid-generation refresh in 2021. However, perhaps due to the supply chain issues and production issues experienced during the COVID pandemic, the Crosstrek won't be starting a new generation in 2023. Yet, it will gain a special edition, and it will have plenty to offer both new and loyal fans.Â
Here's a look at what this fun, small crossover offers on its 2023 model:Â
 Exterior Styling
The Subaru Crosstrek is known for its fun style and its bold color options, and the 2023 model continues with that legacy. The small SUV has a profile that looks like it's ready to spring into action. The front end looks almost pointed, with its narrow, black, hexagonal grille that features a grid of smaller hexagons, with the Subaru logo resting in the middle. A silver bar runs through the grille at the sides of the logo, and the headlights seem to be pulled back from the silver bar, creating a cohesive design.Â
Black body cladding runs throughout the profile, from underneath the front fascia to around the fog lights to around the wheel wells and under the profile. Lots of detailing is seen throughout the body, from the grooves on the hood to the channels running through the profile. The aerodynamic design ends in a small rear spoiler and a rear fascia that echoes the hexagonal design of the front, with a hexagonal cutout around the license plate. Black roof rails sit on top.
The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek manages to look both sporty and stylish, both rugged and refined.Â
Exterior color options for the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek are Pure Red, Plasma Yellow Pearl, Desert Khaki, Lagoon Blue Pearl, Magnetite Gray Metallic, Ice Silver Metallic, Horizon Blue Pearl, Crystal White Pearl, Crystal Black Silica, and Cool Gray Khaki.
Interior Styling and Capacity
The 2023 Crosstrek looks as good inside as it does on the outside. The interior is beautifully detailed, with every element in just the right place. Various accents appear on the dash and the interior trim, including grooves, accent stitching, and chrome accents that give the entire space more visual appeal.Â
A large infotainment screen sits in the center of the dash, and it is flanked by vertical vents and topped by a driver information display screen. Control knobs are located conveniently below the infotainment screen, and controls are mounted on the steering wheel, as well.Â
Interior colors vary by trim, and they can be mixed and matched with exterior colors for a unique configuration that best meets the buyer's preferences. Interior colors include black, gray with orange stitching, black with orange stitching, and black with red stitching. On the higher trim levels, there are also options for gray StarTex with yellow stitching, gray leather with orange stitching, black leather with orange stitching, and navy leather with blue stitching. The colored stitching can be seen on the upholstery, as well as the dashboard and other interior elements.
Seating is for five, and every passenger will find they have plenty of room for comfort. The Crosstrek also offers 20.8 cubic feet of cargo space. If you fold down the rear seats, cargo space bumps up to 55.3 cubic feet of cargo space.
Power and Performance
The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek offers spirited performance that matches its sporty styling. The base model Crosstrek comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Subaru BOXER engine that puts out 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission, but a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission is available. With the manual transmission, the powertrain gets an estimated 22 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined. With the CVT, the powertrain gets an estimated 28 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg combined.
A more powerful engine is available on the Sport and Limited trim levels. It is a 2.5-liter BOXER engine that puts out 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. That engine is paired with a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission that also has an eight-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters. This configuration gets an estimated 27 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined.Â
A hybrid model is available, and it comes with StarDrive Technology that integrates two electric motors with a 2.0-liter direct-injection BOXER engine that puts out 148 horsepower and 134 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission and symmetrical all-wheel drive. The powertrain can get up to 17 miles of electric driving range, and it gets an estimated 35 mpg or 90 mpge.
Subaru has also made some upgrades under the hood to deliver a more comfortable ride. Specifically, the Subaru Global Platform has upgrades that will reduce noise and vibration, so that the ride is quieter and less bumpy. XMode, hill control, and a generous ground clearance all make for a smoother ride where the driver has greater control.Â
Towing capacity for the 2023 Crosstrek is 1,500 pounds, which should be plenty for loading up gear for your weekend trips and adventures.Â
Comfort and Convenience Features
The base model 2023 Subaru Crosstrek comes with plenty of comfort and convenience features that will enhance your ride. The infotainment system includes a 6.5-inch display, a four-speaker audio system, USB port for charging, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Other comfort and convenience features include automatic climate control, a 4.2-inch color driver display, keyless entry, and voice controls.
Many more upgrades are available as you move up the trim levels for the Crosstrek, but the base model offers plenty to enjoy.Â
Safety Features
The 2023 Crosstrek is loaded with some of the latest safety features from Subaru. All models that come with the Lineartronic continuously variable transmission are equipped with the EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which includes automatic pre-collision braking, pre-collision throttle management, lane keep assistance, lane departure warning, sway warning, lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and a lead vehicle start alert. Other standard features include the rear-seat reminder and tire pressure monitoring. A large suite of airbags also comes on every model.Â
Additional safety features are available on the higher trim levels, as with the comfort and convenience features. But you'll find that the base model offers a lot of features that will put you at ease when driving your family and other important passengers.
The 2023 Crosstrek also "Good" or "Superior," which are the highest ratings, on all crash tests with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the group named it a Top Safety Pick. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it five stars.
Trim Levels
The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in five trim levels: The base model and the Premium, Sport, Limited, and Hybrid. Each offers additional comfort, convenience, and safety features, and some offer different powertrains. Choosing a trim level, and adding an options package, can help you customize the Crosstrek to meet your needs and preferences.Â
Here are some of the options added by trim level:
Premium
With this trim level, you start to see some luxury upgrades to the interior, such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, colorful accent stitching, and heated front seats. Other interior additions include a new cargo tray and cover. Exterior upgrades include an acoustic windshield for a quieter ride, heated body-color side mirrors, fog lights, and a windshield de-icer.
Two options packages are available for this trim. The first adds keyless entry and push-button start, a six-way adjustable power driver seat, a sunroof, and blind spot monitoring. A Special Edition package adds a larger, 8-inch infotainment display screen, black interior with red stitching, wheels with a dark finish, and an exclusive Desert Khaki exterior color.
Sport
The Sport trim level boosts performance by adding the 2.5-liter engine powertrain, as well as a terrain selector for greater control over the driving experience. Buyers can also add the Special Edition package on this trim level.
Limited
The Limited is the highest trim level on the Crosstrek. It comes with leather upholstery and interior, chrome door handles, and 18-inch machine-finished wheels. The trim level also adds LED headlights and fog lights. Optional upgrades are available, including a sunroof, navigation, and premium Harman Kardon audio system.

The primary distinction for the Hybrid trim level is that it comes with the hybrid powertrain. It shares the features of the Limited trim, but it comes with navy leather interior with blue stitching.Â
