2024 Subaru Ascent vs. 2024 Chevy Tahoe

Most full-size SUVs will certainly meet the needs of most large families. Whether it's the everyday work commute, school run, tugging along a trailer on the weekend to pick up furniture, or tackling back roads on the annual holiday trip.Â
A large family SUV can do all this and more. Choosing a versatile seven- or more-seater SUV is a no-brainer; it's just choosing what manufacturer and model is the difficult part.
In our article, we look at two excellent choices: one from the land of the rising sun, Japan, and one from the land of the brave, The USA.
Read on as we take a closer look at what each model offers to prospective buyers.Â
2024 Subaru Ascent
On sale in the US starting from 2018, the 2024 Subaru Ascent, as a seven- or eight-seater, continues to be Subaru's largest vehicle with production based in the USA.Â
Last refreshed in 2023, the Subaru Ascent sees little in the way of changes for the 2024 model year and is available in an impressive lineup of eight trims:Â
- Base eight-passenger
- Premium eight-passenger
- Premium seven-passenger
- Onyx Edition seven-passenger
- Limited eight-passenger
- Limited seven-passenger
- Onyx Edition Limited seven-passengerÂ
- Touring seven passenger
2024 Chevy Tahoe
The 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe range continues for 2024 as one of the biggest and best-selling SUVs on the US market. This fifth-generation model was introduced in late 2019, with a facelift unveiled late in 2023, but those buyers looking to get the latest will need to wait until late 2024 to purchase this facelifted 2025 model.
The Tahoe is still available as a seven or eight-seater with both RWD and AWD options, and buyers get to choose from the following trims: LS, LT, RST, Premier, and High Country models.
Powertrains
Keeping choices simple, Subaru makes do with a single engine fitment across the range. A 2.4-liter turbocharged SUBARU BOXER 4-cylinder DOHC engine produces 260 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm with a torque output of 277 pounds per foot @ 2,000 - 4,800 rpm.Â
The standard transmission is a Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) paired with the standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with off-road X mode.
The 2024 Subaru Ascent can tow up to a maximum of 5,000 pounds.
For 2024, the Chevy Tahoe is available with three engines. Standard is a 5.3-liter V8, making 355 horsepower and 383-pound feet of torque. A second 6.2 liter V8 makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The sole diesel option is a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-6 with an output of 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.Â
A 10-speed automatic transmission, with rear-wheel drive being the standard drivetrain, with four-wheel drive optional.
If maximum towing capability of up to 8400 pounds is your priority, then the Chevy Tahoe trims fitted with the 5.3 liter V8 with RWD will be your go-to choice.
Exterior
The Subaru Ascent accommodates three rows of seats, which is reflected in its overall length of 196.8 inches. Standout key exterior features include:
- LED steering responsive headlightsÂ
- Gloss black and chrome front grille
- Crystal Black Silica-finish folding side mirrors on selected trims
- Body-color door handlesÂ
- Raised roof railsÂ
- Optional power moonroof
The Ascent offers a useful 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and the trim lineup features alloy wheels of 18 to 20 inches.
Eight exterior color choices are available on the 2024 Subaru Ascent.
First off, the Chevy Tahoe is a big vehicle and measures 210.7 inches long, making it the largest SUV in this class. Sporting a boxy look with rounded edges, the Tahoe features a sharply curved front grille and LED lighting.
Key standard exterior features are:
- Daytime running lights

- Tow hitchÂ
Lower LS and LT models ride on 18-inch bright silver painted wheels. RST and Premier models have standard 20-inch wheels with 22-inch rims optional, while both RST and High Country are fitted with 22-inch wheels as standard.

Cargo volume is 43.5 cubic feet behind the second row, expanding to 75.6 cubic feet behind the first seat row thanks to the velcro straps to hold up the load floor for added space in the cargo area.
The 2024 Chevy Tahoe can be configured as a 7 or 8-passenger vehicle, with either a bench seat or captain's chairs for the second row, with the third row always seating three occupants. Cloth seats are standard, as well as lumbar support on both driver and front passenger seats and automatic power windows.Â
The interior shows off a push-button shifter column located on the dashboard, plus an impressive nine-camera display for enhanced towing capabilities. Auto dual-zone front climate control and rear climate control are standard fare.
With all of the seats up, the Tahoe has 25.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the third row. With the third row folded, there are 72.6 cubic feet available behind the second row of seats and with both the second and third rows folded flat, this large Chevy SUV offers up to 122.9 cubic feet of total cargo volume.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Standard Subaru Starlink 11.6-inch display multimedia system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot is fitted across all trims, along with six speakers.Â
Range-topping trims offer 4G LTE Wi-Fi capability, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system with upgraded multimedia navigation is fitted.
The Chevy Tahoe is equipped with a 10.25-inch touch screen that is standard on all trims, with a pair of 12.6-inch LCD rear screens connectable through passengers' smartphones, able to play different programs on the two screens.
