Subaru Solterra Charging Guide (Updated 2026) Granite Subaru NH EV Owners
The Subaru Solterra compact all-electric SUV is Subaru's first global EV model, offering remarkably low running costs and reduced maintenance compared to a traditional internal combustion engine vehicle.
It's no secret that this Subaru model was developed with Toyota, as it shares much of its DNA with the Toyota bZ4X. For 2026, the Subaru Solterra has received significant upgrades, including an upgrade to its charging system.
It's this new enhanced charging system that we take a closer look at in our article: Subaru Solterra Charging Guide (Updated 2026) Granite Subaru NH EV Owners.
What are the benefits of the upgraded charging system on the 2026 Subaru Solterra?
Subaru's latest EV charging systems are flexible, with options ranging from overnight home charging to faster public charging for longer trips.
Well, the good news for those considering purchasing the latest 2026 Subaru Solterra is the model's DC charger, which supports at least 150kW and can charge your EV's battery from 10% to 80% in about 28 minutes.
The Solterra also offers an increased driving range of 278 miles, up from the previous model's 222 miles.
What powertrain is in the Subaru Solterra?
Let's take a quick tour of the Solterra's powertrain so you can better understand the important how-and-why bits of charging your Subaru EV.
Like all Subarus, the Solterra is AWD and features electric motors on both front and rear axles.
The front electric motor is a permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor making 224 horsepower and 198 pound-feet of torque. A permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor with 117 horsepower and a torque output of 125 pound-feet is found at the rear.
Something has to provide the necessary electric power to produce this combined power output of 338 horsepower, and that is the onboard liquid-cooled lithium-ion, 67 kWh (C/D est) battery pack.
Keeping this battery pack fully charged, enabling drivers to use the Solterra's full driving range, is the task of the Solterra's charging system.
Key features of the enhanced charging system in the 2026 Subaru Solterra
Let's share some key features of Solterra's charging system that enhance owners' EV experience.
Charging Port
The latest 2026 model dispenses with the old CCS port and is now fitted with a North American Charging Standard (NACS or Tesla) connector, which facilitates easy access to over 25,000 DC fast-charge locations around the country, so owners going on any cross-country travels need not suffer from 'range anxiety'.
Your Solterra can also be charged at J1772 and CCS stations using the supplied adapters, which means owners are covered at virtually all charging stations across the states.
DC Fast Charging
The quickest way to get you fully charged is level 3 DC fast charging, which can get your Solterra from 10% to 80% in about 28 to 35 minutes under optimal charging conditions like warmer temps.
Level 2 Charging
Recommended Level 2 charging delivers a faster charge and requires a dedicated 240-volt charging station that can be installed in most homes. The system uses a 6.6-kW to 7-kW charger that can fully charge the battery in 6 to 7 hours.
Owners will be happy to learn that other level 2 chargers are available for public or customer use at retail stores, hotels, and parking lots.
Level 1 Charging
Level 1 chargers are the slowest and use the common 120V AC outlets in your home, which can take up to 50 hours for a full charge.
Owners should plan their travel times as Level 1 charging does, unfortunately, deliver a slow charge of around 2 to 4 miles of range per hour plugged in.
Cold Weather Performance
The 2026 Solterra is now equipped with a new battery preconditioning system that can help maintain fast charging speeds in the colder weather that Granite Subaru NH EV owners experience every year as winter rolls around.
How do I fully charge my 2026 Subaru Solterra EV?
For owners planning on charging their EV at home, it's a good idea to match your charging method with your travel needs. For example, owners using their EV for shorter daily commutes and running errands may only need a Level 1 charger with a standard 120-volt outlet to support EV charging.
Owners with driving habits that take them off the beaten path more frequently may require a faster charging option like Level 2 charging that will require their home to be equipped with a dedicated 240-volt electrical circuit.
It's important for owners to note that charge times do vary based on their vehicle's level of charge, the applicable charging rate, ambient temperature, and many other factors.
The charging process itself is pretty straightforward and doesn't require any wizardry on the part of owners. Prospective buyers will appreciate the inclusion of the correct dual-voltage (Level 1 and Level 2) charging cable with the purchase of their Subaru electric car.
One important rule for owners to remember is to never use Level 1 or Level 2 chargers with any type of extension cord.
Step 1
This is pretty obvious, but your Solterra must be stopped and parked close to your charging station.
Your Subaru must be turned off and the parking brake engaged. Remember to always think safety!
Step 2
The 2026 Subaru Solterra's charging port is conveniently located on the front passenger side fender to avoid occupying multiple spots at public charging stations. Owners will need to connect the charging connector by plugging in the NACS connector until it clicks and locks into place.
Step 3
Monitor your charging status by ensuring that the blue light on the dashboard illuminates, indicating active charging. The dashboard will conveniently display the remaining time till full charge is achieved.
Step 4
Disconnect the charging cable by ensuring your Solterra is unlocked to press the release button, and remove the charging connector.
