Subaru Redesign: 2019 to 2025 Outback. 5 Major Changes

When it comes to the countless changes the Subaru Outback has had over the years, we can't skip its exterior refresh, new lighting package, comfort enhancements, technology and infotainment upgrades, as well as increased availability of its turbocharged engine. Those are only some of the changes the Outback has seen since 2019, and we continue to see new upgrades and amenities into this next model year, 2025. Stay tuned as we get into the nitty-gritty and share five major changes the Subaru Outback has seen in the most recent release cycles. Let's begin!
1. Exterior Updates
Starting with the most apparent changes to the Subaru Outback since 2019, its exterior has changed quite a bit. For example, the 2025 Subaru Outback will now see things like more aggressive and rugged styling, bolder body cladding, a revised grille featuring LED headlights, and the Wilderness trim getting everything from matte black alloy wheels and an anti-glare hood decal.
2. Interior and Tech Advancements
In addition to the endless exterior updates since 2019, the inside of this SUV feels much more tech-savvy, including the now-current higher-resolution touchscreen with an improved interface and a standard 11.6-inch display on higher trims. Your base seats are easier to clean, and higher models get things like heated steering wheels, ventilated seats, and upgraded materials. Overall, the inside of the Outback, even standard trims, feel much nicer in 2025 than in 2019.
Highlights:
- StarTex water-repellent upholstery
- Anodized Copper-finish interior accents
- LED interior and cargo-area lighting
- An 11.6-inch display on higher trims
3. Your Engine Options Got Better
Performance-wise, the Outback has seen more access to its turbocharged engine. Specifically, a more powerful turbocharged engine option is available on higher trim levels like the Wilderness and XT, producing 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque.
Breakdown:
- 2019 Outback: Standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder (175 horsepower) and available 3.6-liter 6-cylinder (256 horsepower)
- 2025 Outback: Still offers a base 2.5-liter flat-four engine but also has a turbocharged 2.4-liter option on higher trims (260 horsepower)
4. There's Much Better Towing
Towing is another upgrade we have seen from the Subaru Outback since 2019. Previous generations had a capacity of ~2,700 pounds. In 2025, your towing capacity will be between 2,700 and 3,500 pounds-an 800-pound improvement! This makes road trips and cross-country adventures even easier, as well as moving large items to and from.
5. Your Outback Got Safer
In addition to becoming a more adventurous SUV overall, the Subaru Outback has improved standard safety and driver assistance. For instance, compared to 2019, Subaru's advanced "EyeSight" driver assist technology has expanded its capability-it now has a wider field of view, updated control software, and an electric brake booster.
You have improvements to the following features:
- Blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert
- DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System
- Reverse automatic braking
- X-MODE with hill descent control
- Automatic emergency steering
- 180-Degree Front-View Monitor (better quality)
- Rear-Vision Camera (improved resolution)
