Consumer Reports recently released its annual rankings of car brands, and Subaru rose two places to take the top spot for 2022. For the previous two years, Subaru was third on the list, which ranks 32 vehicle brands.

"Brands that rise to the top tend to have the most consistent performance across their model lineups," Jake Fisher, senior director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports, said in a statement. "For consumers, it shows that you don't need to splurge on a luxury brand to get a safe, satisfying, and reliable car."

Consumer Reports uses several variables when determining its annual rankings. The four main categories are: Independent road tests, active crash and safety tests, owner satisfaction, and reliability. Consumer Reports uses specific metrics for measuring these items. The magazine purchases new vehicles anonymously to conduct its own road tests, but it relies on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to determine crash and safety performance. It uses hundreds of thousands of owner surveys to determine owner satisfaction, as well as reliability.

After compiling all the information in these categories, Consumer Reports determines an overall score for each brand. Subaru had an overall score of 81 for 2022, while Mazda and BMW, which came in second and third place, respectively, each had scores of 78.

Rounding out the top 10 of brands this year were Honda, Lexus, Audi, Porsche, Mini, Toyota, and Infiniti.

In addition to Subaru taking the top spot on the overall list, the 2022 Subaru Forester also topped the list on the magazine's rankings for small SUVs. In its rankings, Consumer Reports said, "The secret to Forester's success has been its efficient, spacious design; strong fuel economy; focus on safety; great road-test performance; and strong reliability history."

The magazine also named the Forester its best overall pick for 2022.

Consumer Reports said, "It is hard to overstate the importance of design. The Forester's upright shape provides greater access, cabin space, and cargo room than its competitors. The tall roof and large windows provide fishbowl-like outward visibility, giving a wide view of the road and surroundings. And responsive handling and a supple ride further enhance the driving experience. The latest EyeSight suite of safety features is standard."
