Subaru Tires
Few things are as important but get as little love as your vehicle's tires. They're one of the most important parts of your vehicle, but when it comes time to get new tires, plenty of discount shops try to put lower-quality tires on your vehicle that won't last and are barely road worthy.
Tires are important, and it's important to get the right tires for your vehicle. Luckily with Granite Subaru's tire service getting great new tires is both easy and convenient.
Why Getting the Right Tires Is So Important
When you think about all the things that make your vehicle run, the tires aren't always the first things that come to mind. But without a set of tires, your vehicle wouldn't move anywhere.
Not only do they allow your vehicle to keep rolling, but they give you the traction your vehicle needs to get started on slippery roads and to stay on the road without sliding all over the place.
And while the right tires certainly help your vehicle get moving faster and more consistently, even more importantly they're responsible for stopping your vehicle.
The right tires can dramatically decrease your vehicle's stopping distance, which can be the difference between a close call and an accident.
There's a lot to look into when you're picking out tires for your Subaru, and who would know what's best for a Subaru than a Subaru technician?
Checking When You Need New Tires
If you don't know you need new tires in the first place, then you're not going to know when you need to take your vehicle in for a new set. That's why we want to give you a quick rundown on how you can tell when it's time for new tires.
The legal minimum tread depth for tires is 2/32". The easiest way to check for this depth is the "penny test." Simply get a penny and stick it between the tread with Lincoln's head facing down. If you can still see Lincoln's head when you do this you still have 2/32" of tread, if not it's time for new tires.
But it's important to note that while this is the legal minimum tread depth, the more the tread wears down on tires the less effective they become. This means longer stopping distances, increased chances of hydroplaning, and so much more.
It's why we recommend replacing tires at 4/32" of tread instead. While you'll have to replace the tires a little bit more, you'll get far better performance and safer driving conditions. The good news is checking for this remaining tread depth is pretty easy too.
Instead of using a penny, use a quarter. The test works the same way, except you're using Washington's head on the quarter instead of Lincoln's on the penny.
No matter what tread depth you decide to replace your tires at, ensure you're checking the remaining tread depth across the entire tread.
While some people believe you only need the minimum tread across a portion of the tire, the less tread you have, the less performance you get from the tires. Bald spots on your tires will cause them to skid across the road, which can quickly get you into an accident.
As soon as you see the tread starting to get too low, we recommend taking them in for service so you don't have to worry about hitting the road during inclement weather or if your vehicle will stop on a dime if you need it to.
Getting the Most Out of Your Tires With Granite Subaru
When you get new tires, you want them to last, and there are a few different things you can do to get the most out of your tires. The good news is that Granite Subaru can knock quite a few things off this list for you.
First, you need to ensure that the alignment on your vehicle is correct. If the alignment is off it'll drag a tire across the road, which increases the total amount of friction and the speed at which the tread wears down.
Second, you need to keep up with your tire rotations. We recommend rotating the tires at least every 10,000 miles, but you can also tie it into your regular oil changes. The important thing is you stay consistent with the rotations that way the tires wear evenly.
From there, you need to ensure the tires stay properly inflated. Of course, this is something Granite Subaru will check for you when you bring your vehicle in for maintenance, but you really should check more often than that.
At a minimum, you should check your tire pressure at least once a month, but if there have been recent temperature swings you should check it more often than that.
As the temperatures change your vehicle's tire pressure will drop, leading to more tread making contact with the road. This extra contact creates more friction and wears down the tires faster than they would wear at the correct tire pressure.
