2023 Subaru Solterra vs 2023 Toyota BZ4X

The world is gearing up for more electric vehicles on the road, and both Subaru and Toyota don't want to miss the mark. That's why both brands took the time to research and develop two of the best all-electric SUVs on the market today.

The Subaru Solterra and the Toyota BZ4X are two all-electric SUVs from two of the world's largest and most reliable auto manufacturers.

But how do these two vehicles stack up against each other, and which one is right for you and your family? We highlighted some of the most important specifications for each vehicle for you here. That way you can do your homework and get the perfect all-electric vehicle for you the first time.

2023 Subaru Solterra

2023 is the first year Subaru released the Solterra, and they're limiting production this year to just 6,500 vehicles. This means it can be a little more challenging to get your hands on one of these vehicles, but it's not impossible.

Not only that, but if it does well we can expect Subaru to release more of these vehicles next year.

Performance Specs and Range

If you're looking at an all-electric vehicle, one of the first things you need to consider is the range. And with a range of 222 miles the Solterra can easily handle most daily commutes and activities.

It goes from a completely dead battery to a full charge in just 11 hours with 220 volts, although that time does go up to 50 hours if you're using 110 volts to charge it.

On the performance side of things, the Solterra produces 215 horsepower, and because of its lightweight it's enough to take it from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 6.5 seconds.

Cargo Space and Ground Clearance

With 8.3 inches of ground clearance, the Solterra is a versatile SUV that can easily tackle most uneven terrain. It is on the smaller side of things compared to non-electric SUVs, but compared to other all-electric SUVs it's actually a little more spacious.

It offers 29 cubic feet of storage space, which is more than enough for kids sporting equipment, groceries, golf clubs, or just about anything else you can think of. However, unlike some all-electric vehicles, the Solterra does not have a "frunk" or a trunk where the engine usually sits. Finally, the Solterra has five seats, making it a great family-friendly all-electric SUV.

Standard Features

As a forward-thinking all-electric vehicle, it makes sense that Solterra comes with tons of standard technological features. Subaru prioritizes safety with this vehicle, which shines through with all the standard safety features.

Standard safety features include a forward collision warning system with automated emergency braking, a lane departure warning system with lane keeping assist, and even blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.

On the comfort side of things the Solterra has tons of useful technological features there too. There's a 12.3" infotainment system with integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and every Solterra comes with a wireless phone charger.

Finally, for a little extra peace of mind each Solterra comes with a comprehensive 8-year/100,000-mile warranty on all the electrical components in the vehicle.

2023 Toyota BZ4X

The Toyota BZ4X is a new addition to Toyota's lineup for 2023, and it's another all-electric SUV option. However, Toyota hasn't released production amounts for the BZ4X yet, so we don't know how easy it will be to get one of these all-electric SUVs for yourself.

Performance Specs and Range

The Toyota BZ4X is another all-electric vehicle, and it actually has a slightly longer range than the Solterra. It can take you up to 242 miles on a single charge. But while it's longer than the Solterra, at just 20 extra miles it's not that big of a difference.

An additional tradeoff is slightly lower performance specs. It produces 201 horsepower, which is 14 horsepower less than the Solterra. Still, because of the lighter weight, it can take the BZ4X from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 5.8 seconds.

Finally, the charging time between the Solterra and the BZ4X are identical, with it taking 11 hours to go from completely dead to a full charge with a 220-voltage charging cable.

Cargo Space and Ground Clearance

Compared to the Solterra the BZ4X sits just a little closer to the ground and has a little less cargo space. Still, at 8.1 inches of ground clearance, it's still plenty high enough for an SUV and with 27.7 cubic feet of storage space.

Just like the Solterra it does not have a trunk where a typical engine should be. Still, with 27.7 cubic feet of storage space and five seats, it's more than large enough for groceries, sporting equipment, and just about anything else you want to take from place to place.

Standard Features

Toyota is well-known for making high-quality vehicles with durability and safety as one of their top priorities, and the BZ4X is certainly no exception.

Standard safety features include:

  • Automated emergency braking system with pedestrian detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • A lane departure warning system with lane keeping assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts
  • Rear exit assist

It also has a 12.3" infotainment touch screen with integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7" digital gauge display on the dash, and an all-wheel-drive mode that comes standard.

And just like Subaru, Toyota offers an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty on all electrical components to give you a little more peace of mind before purchasing the vehicle. And this is in addition to the standard vehicle warranty that comes with the vehicle.
