2024 Subaru Impreza vs. 2024 Subaru Crosstrek

Subaru's current ranges of passenger vehicles, crossovers & SUVs all offer high-quality build, technology and reliability that the Japanese automaker is renowned for.

Our article pits two of Subaru's own vehicles against each other as we compare the latest compact SUV, Subaru Crosstrek, and compact passenger Impreza models.

Read on as we share in some detail what buyers can expect from each of these models from Subaru.

2024 Subaru Crosstrek

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek offers buyers a five-passenger compact SUV that is available in five trims. A popular choice in the somewhat saturated compact SUV category, the Subaru Crosstrek, now in its third generation, introduced early in 2023, continues to offer buyers an affordable and rugged design that is both fuel-efficient and more off-road capable than many other rivals.

Subaru is a fan of sticking to its guns, and Subaru vehicles don't go through radical changes; they evolve over time. The 2024 Crosstrek exterior and interior design has evolved from the last generation to bring thoughtful updates to the design, engineering safety and infotainment technologies.

Trim levels for 2024 are, Crosstrek Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited, and an all-new 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness trim.

2024 Subaru Impreza

The new 2024 Subaru Impreza is an all-new sixth-generation model and sports a stiffer body structure, improved chassis, and more standard equipment. The new 2024 Impreza is now sold exclusively as a five-door hatchback.

Trim levels for the 2024 Impreza are Base, Sport, and the rally inspired RS trim last seen in the late 1990's.

Exterior

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek's new design, with a steep curvature over its profile, features a new design applied to the grille's mesh with a boomerang-shaped accent over the front fog lights.

The front headlights are steeply angled and the entire lower body perimeter of the 2024 Crosstrek features black molding, becoming more pronounced over the fenders.

The rear view also features boomerang-style tail lights and standard roof rails, which are rated at 700 pounds.

Base and Premium models are fitted with 17x7.0-inch aluminum-alloy wheels in a dark gray finish wrapped in 225/60 R17 99H all-season tires, while Sport and Limited trims ride on 18-inch alloys with 225/55 R18 98V all-season tires.

Additional equipment, such as heated side mirrors, roof racks, and a heated windshield, are to be found across trim levels.

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has a minimum ground clearance of 8.7 inches, and buyers needing enhanced clearance for off-road travel will appreciate the 9.3 inches of ground clearance that the off-road-oriented Wilderness trim offers.

The 2024 Subaru Impreza sees updates to the exterior that are similar to the design language seen on the latest generation of the Crosstrek.

The hatchback configuration shows off, with base trim steel wheels and alloy wheels on the upper trims. LED headlamps, daytime running lights, body-color door handles, two-speed windshield wipers with variable intermittent mode and mist feature are standard with available front fog lights in a black boomerang styled recess. The boomerang styling also makes its way to the rear tail lights.

The 2024 Impreza is fitted with Subaru's AWD system as standard, a very nifty feature on wet or snow-covered roads.

Interior

The 2024 Crosstrek cabin has redesigned seats for additional comfort, along with additional sound-deadening materials to keep the cabin better insulated from outside noises.

The seats on most models are cloth-trimmed, while leather upholstery is optional. All trims have dual-zone auto climate control and power windows all around with driver and front passenger auto-up/down, with buyers of the upper trim levels getting heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Crosstrek accommodates 20 cubic feet of luggage with all seats in the up position, expanding to 55 cubic feet by folding the rear seats down. The cargo area of all trims is fitted with two grocery bag hooks and four tie-down hooks, plus a rear cargo tray.

The Impreza interior is typically Subaru with a more utilitarian approach. Dual-zone climate controls are standard for the entire model line.

Subaru focused on a more ergonomic front-seat design and, like the Crosstrek, a quieter cabin. Hard buttons for the infotainment display rather than touchscreen controls are present.

With the 60/40 folding rear seats folded down, the hatchback offers a cavernous cargo capacity of 56 cubic feet.

Powertrain

Crosstrek Base and Premium trims use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine making 152 horsepower @ 6000 rpm and torque of 145-foot pounds @ 4,000 rpm as standard, while Sport, Limited and the new Wilderness trim offer a more powerful 2.5-liter flat-four engine that produces 182 horsepower and torque of 178-foot pounds.

Subaru has equipped the Crosstrek with a continuously variable transmission, and all Crosstrek models are equipped with Subaru's standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

The Impreza Base and Sport trims feature the same naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-four engine, making 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The larger 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine is exclusively available for the new RS model, providing similar outputs of 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque as the Crosstrek upper trims.

A CVT is standard on all 2024 Imprezas, as is torque vectoring and the standard all-wheel-drive system.

Infotainment

The base Crosstrek trim features a SUBARU STARLINK dual 7.0-inch multimedia touch display screen, a four-speaker sound system, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Upper trims see fitment of an enhanced SUBARU STARLINK 11.6-inch Multimedia system with six speakers plus a wireless phone charger and a few additional features.

Featuring infotainment that mirrors that of the Crosstrek, the Starlink multimedia system is standard on Sport and RS models and is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 11.6-inch touchscreen display controls the sound system, HVAC, and certain vehicle functions. The Base trim makes do with the same standard 7.0-inch screen.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Both of these 2024 Subaru models are equipped with similar safety features, including a 4-wheel anti-lock braking system, brake assist, and a brake override system, and Subaru's advanced frontal airbag system comprises side curtain airbags, seat-mounted front seat side pelvis/torso airbags, drivers knee airbag and a passenger seat cushion airbag.

Subaru's EyeSight driver-assistance technology is also standard with features including lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, automated emergency braking, high beam assist, vehicle dynamics control, adaptive cruise control and more.
